2020 Annual Report
Despite the unprecedented challenges of 2020, Insmed’s dedication to patients remained constant. Our shared sense of purpose to serve the patient community became more important than ever, as we adjusted to new ways of working and new means of connection. This purpose also took on deeper meaning as the inequities that exist in our society and healthcare system became more magnified in 2020. As a company and as part of an industry focused on transforming lives, the past year taught us valuable lessons about how each of us can do more to effect change. As we carry out our mission, now and in the future, we will continue to listen, learn, and adapt so that our efforts not only benefit patients and their communities, but also the communities in which we live and work.
Geri: Living with MAC Lung Disease
Geri was living an active life, with a fast-paced career in publishing and a close network of family and friends. But everything changed when she coughed up blood, kicking off a frightening two-year journey during which she saw multiple doctors and underwent a number of tests. Finally, Geri met with a pulmonologist who immediately recognized pockets of significant bacterial accumulation in her CAT scan—something a prior pulmonologist had misread as scar tissue. A sputum sample confirmed that she had Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease.
“At first, the diagnosis was like jumping into the deep end. I had to adjust my mindset and accept that managing the disease is an effort I have to make to be healthy—not a burden that controls my life.”
Stories like Geri’s are what fuel us not only to continue the work we do each day but also to push beyond the status quo and grow and evolve our company—so that we can realize our ambitious vision and serve even more patients in years to come.
Being ‘All IN’ for me means waking up every morning and knowing that I can make a difference for our patients.”

It really makes a difference when you believe in what you’re doing, and the outcome is helping so many people who might not otherwise be helped.”
As a company whose mission is, at its core, to transform patients’ lives, we are deeply committed to patients, employees, the medical community, and the communities in which we live and work. We take this responsibility seriously and know it extends well beyond the workplace. As we grow and evolve globally, we are sharpening our focus on a variety of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations, including:
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
We are committed to promoting diversity in our workforce and to taking steps to support equity and inclusion for all. We are proud that women hold 30% of our board seats and comprise 50% of our executive committee, and we are implementing initiatives to continue to enhance our board and workforce diversity, advance the development of diverse talent at all levels, and ensure diverse succession plans for both our employee workforce and our board.
There’s such a strong sense of collaboration that permeates through the whole organization and the feeling that we really are united behind the common goal of serving the needs of the patient. I’d like to think that I play a small part in meeting that common goal.”
Senior Director, Marketing & Commercial Excellence – EMEA
Patients are at the center of our mission. We operate a robust patient support program, partake in regular, compliant interaction with patient advocacy groups, and invite patients to share their experiences with us both in person and virtually. Furthermore, we are committed to providing patients with access to our medicines and work with numerous stakeholders to enable this access through appropriate channels. We have included patient support metrics in our 2021 corporate objectives, making all employees accountable for overcoming access barriers and enhancing patient education and awareness.
We work hard to create and cultivate an environment in which employees feel a deep sense of satisfaction, empowerment, and belonging. We seek to develop our talent within the organization through access to training, continuous learning programs, and other development initiatives. We also invest in employees’ total wellbeing. As part of this effort, we have put in place several financial wellness programs, including an Employee Stock Purchase Plan and 401(k) match program, among other initiatives. We also promote physical and mental wellbeing, including providing fitness classes virtually and onsite and offering access to mental health services.
We support several green measures, including increased recycling efforts, providing reusable cups to employees, installing electric car chargers, and limiting waste in our food service distribution. As our company grows, we will enhance our environmental practices to reduce our carbon footprint.
We give back to our communities and partake in several employee-led community service initiatives, both in the U.S. and abroad. Past activities include holiday food drives, card-writing campaigns for members of the military, care-kit assembly for hospitals and disaster relief organizations, and an annual school supply drive. To address the unique needs brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we were proud to donate personal protective equipment to those on the front lines, share iPads with local hospitals to enable critically ill patients to see their loved ones, and raise money for those facing food insecurity in New Jersey.
